The No-weight Weigh-in

There will be no weigh-in today.

If you read last week's weigh-in post, you'll partly understand why I am avoiding the scale at all costs this week.

The deeper reason is that I think I've become a slave to the scale. Sure, it started out with a casual weekly hop on the scale to see how I was progressing, but then I started jumping on every few days. Then daily. Then morning and night. I didn't like what I was doing. It felt really obsessive and my husband started looking at me funny and asking "Are you on that thing again?".

Besides, I'm not mentally prepared to play the game this week. The last few days have been somewhat chaotic. I've had no exercise, late nights, done a lot of mental gymnastics for work and ate a lot of french fries. You read that correctly. French fries.

I hope to get back on track this weekend.

  1. I completely understand and have made that same choice before. Some would say it's a mistake, but I think it is fine. Do your best to maintain for now, if you need to.

  2. That darn scale messes with me all the time too. I get it. You will get back on track and you will find a happy medium with weighing yourself. Sometimes it just takes time to figure it all out.

  3. Been there, done that. It happens to us all and I think you are doing a great job and taking a break from that darn scale is a good idea. Life happens, we don't need the scale to tell us that. I'm sure you'll get back on track and kill it next week.

Have a fabulous weekend! Sending positive vibes ! :)

  4. I have been there as well. Just make sure that you get back on there after a week. If you are anything like me, I like to stick my head in the sand sometimes and think, if I cant see the weight that I am then I can pretend there is nothing wrong with the food/exercise decisions that I have made. Dont get me worng, I definitely think that you should have a week off if you feel like it though. x

  5. Rae, I think that is a smart move to stay off the scale- get back on track... keep going.
Thanks for following along as we build the little house! No, I am not worried about the work because we hade dreamed about this for years and years! Now... in a month I may have a different answer! hahaha!

  6. I see nothing wrong with being focused on the scale. It works for some, not for others. There is no absolute and only you can judge if it is an enabler or a barrier.

  7. I know the feeling :-( That number starts to take over. But at least you realize that you need to step away from the scale and give yourself a break. You can do it!! I started hiding mine in a higher up place so that I only really have the desire to take it down to weigh myself once a week.

  8. Hey rae rae -- do what I do.... only step on the scale when you don't care what the number is.

In other words, when you're doing things right -- eating right, exercising, and loving yourself with a bit of forgiveness/kindness. Then the scale is just a metric, not a master.

  9. You guys are the best. Seriously. I've given this a lot of thought, and decided I will not be hanging up the scale long-term. I think it is important to notice small changes. That said, having scale that makes 3-4lb swings in the span of 20 seconds is not that conducive to really tracking progress. I plan to get a new more reliable scale and only get on it once a week.

FGvsW: I love the idea of only getting on it when you don't care about the number. I just don't think I'm there yet. I care about that number all the time! LOL That is something to work towards though. Thanks!

  10. Hi Rae! I used the C25K program so I could run a 5K. Before that, there was no way I could run 5K without stopping. So I found the program and decided to go for it. I absolutely loved it! I highly recommend it. It's a 9 week program and you do 3 runs each week. You can find podcasts to put on your ipod/mp3 player and they tell you exactly run to run and walk. If you go to the beginning of my blog, I talk about it and there are links. If you can't find them, just let me know. This program totally works. I went from barely being able to run 5 minutes straight to being able to run 30 minutes straight and now longer!

  11. Hi Rae! Just found your blog and LOVE it! Read several posts and found myself nodding in agreement. Dealing with unhealthy foods at family events/weekends? Check. Work so hard, only to post only a 1 pound (or not even) loss in a week? Check. Loud huffing and puffing during running bursts? Check. I like knowing I'm not alone, so thank you!

  13. Been there! Done that! I think its inevitable. There are always going to be times when we fall off track or don't do as good as we hoped for. Why upset ourselves even more right! Hopefully it will help you get back on track so you be victorious next week!
